a bonnet, a flash of pale hair, a little hand clutching the older girl’s skirt. The younger one didn’t lift her face. She was making a small sound, not crying, not exactly, more like a hum, soft and broken the way a child hums when she’s trying to remember a lullaby her mother used to sing.

That your sister? Elias asked. Don’t you look at her.

All right. Don’t you even look. I ain’t looking.

See eyes right on you, miss. He held her stare. The sun was a hammer on the back of his neck.

Cicas screamed in the dry brush. Somewhere east, a hawk cut the empty sky. How long you been out here?

None of your business. Reckon it is, though? You’re a long way from anything.

I said it ain’t your business, mister. All right. Elias breathed out slow.

All right. He let his eyes drift just for a half second to the man under the wagon. He didn’t have to look long.

He’d seen enough dead men in his life to read one from 20 paces. The hole was small and clean. Dead center of the forehead, powder burn on the temple.

Up close, then close enough that the killer had wanted him to know it was coming. A wedding band on the left hand. A pocket watch chain still hanging from a vest pocket silver.

Nobody had robbed him. They’d wanted him gone. Not gone for what he had.

Gone for what he knew. Your daddy? Elias asked softer.

The little girl’s chin trembled. She didn’t answer. What was his name, miss?

Don’t you say his name. All right, I won’t. Don’t you dare.

I won’t, child. I swear it. She blinked, and a tear cut a clean track through the dust on her cheek.

She didn’t lower the gun. She wouldn’t. He could see it in her eyes.

That flat, scorched look he’d seen on boys at Shiloh Boys who’d already buried their friends and were just waiting their turn. A look no 9-year-old had any right to wear. How long since it happened?

He asked. Yesterday. Yesterday morning.

Sun was high. And you’ve been out here all night with him. He told us to stay with him.

He told us not to leave him out here for the coyotes. Elias closed his eyes for the space of one breath. Just one.

Then he opened them again. What’s your name, miss? Why?

Cuz I’m fixing to make you a promise. And a man ought to know the name of the person he’s making a promise to. She studied him.

The shotgun didn’t move. Emma, she said finally. Emma.

Emma Caldwell. Emma Caldwell. That’s a fine name.

Strong name. He tipped his hat back an inch with one raised finger slow so she’d see his hand. And the little one, Rose.

Rose. How old’s Rose? Five.

She’ll be six in October. All right. He nodded.

Miss Emma Caldwell. Here’s my promise. I ain’t going to touch you.

I ain’t going to touch your sister. I ain’t going to touch your daddy. I’m going to sit down right here in the dirt slow.

So you can see me do it and I’m going to stay sitting until you tell me to do otherwise. That suit you. She didn’t answer.

He took that as permission. He folded down into the dust the way an old man folds careful with his knees. The colt at his hip.

He eased out with two fingers and laid in the sand beside him but toward her. There he said. Now I’m just a fella sitting in your front parlor waiting to be told if I’m welcome.

A breath of wind moved across the canyon. The wagon canvas slapped against the broken bonnet. The little one rose finally lifted her face, pale as flower.

Big dark eyes swallowed up by a face too small for them. She looked at Elias and didn’t blink. Mister, she said, don’t talk to him, Rosie.

Mister, are you a bad man? Rosie hush up. I asked him, Emma.

Elias took his hat off and set it on his knee. No, Miss Rose. I ain’t a bad man.

I’ve been called worse by better folks, but I ain’t a bad one. Not in the way you mean. Did bad men kill our daddy?

Rosie, did they missed her? I reckon they did, sweetheart. Why?

Elias swallowed. He could feel Emma’s eyes drilling into the side of his face. The shotgun was still up, still cocked.

I don’t know yet, Miss Rose, but I aim to find out. Are you going to find out today? Maybe not today.

When? Soon as I can, sweetheart. Soon as I’m able.

Rose nodded very seriously, the way small children nod when they’ve decided to trust a grown person against all the evidence. She let go of her sister’s skirt and took one step around her toward Elias. Rose, get back here.

Emma’s voice climbed half an octave. Rose Caldwell, you get behind me right this second. He’s not a bad man, Emma.

You don’t know that. He took off his hat for us. Emma’s mouth worked.

The shotgun lowered the smallest fraction of an inch. Then it came right back up. You don’t know nothing, Rosie.

You’re just a baby. I ain’t a baby. You’re five.

I’m almost six. Get behind me. But the little one didn’t.

She walked slow and steady on legs that had to be near collapsing from thirst the dozen feet between her sister and Elias Walker. She stopped in front of him. She studied his face the way old women study cuts of meat at a butcher’s counter.

Your eyes are sad, she said. Yes, ma’am. Did somebody die for you, too?

The cicas filled up the silence. Elias’s jaw worked once, twice. Behind Rose, he saw Emma’s face crumpled just slightly.

Saw the hard mask slip and the child underneath show through. Yes, miss, he said. A long time back.

Who? My wife and my little boy. What was your little boy’s name?

Samuel. How old? He’d have been seven this summer.

Rose nodded again like that settled something. She reached out one small dustcaked hand and laid it on Elias Walker’s shoulder. He felt the heat of her fingers right through his shirt.

He felt the trembling in them. He felt how light she was. “Mr.

Walker,” she said, “we ain’t got no water.” He closed his eyes. “All right, sweetheart.” He cleared his throat. “All right, my canteen’s on the saddle yonder.

Your sister’s going to fetch it. Ain’t you Miss Emma?” He opened his eyes. Emma was crying now, silent, furious, ashamed of it.

The shotgun was sagging in her arms. She’d been holding it up for God knew how many hours. Her shoulders shook.

“I can’t put it down, mister,” she whispered. “If I put it down, they might come back.” “I know, child. They said they’d come back.” “I know, they said.” Her voice broke.

They said next time they wouldn’t shoot us quick like they shot daddy. They said it would take a long while. Elias felt something cold and old slide into his chest.

Something he hadn’t felt in 15 years. Not since a field in Tennessee. Not since he’d watched a boy younger than himself bleed out into the wheat.

He recognized it. He’d hoped never to feel it again. Miss Emma.

His voice was different now. Steadier, quieter. You listen to me.

Look at my face. You listen. She looked.

Whoever said that to you, those men, they ain’t coming back here. They ain’t getting near you. They ain’t getting near Rose.

Not while I’m breathing air. You understand me? You don’t even know us.

I know enough. You don’t? Miss Emma Caldwell.

I know enough. She stared at him a long moment. Then the shotgun went down.

Slow all the way down. The hammer. She eased forward with both thumbs the way her daddy must have taught her, careful and proper.

She set the gun in the dust and then she sat down where she’d been standing and put her face in her hands and finally finally started to cry like a child. Rose looked at Elias. “Are you going to pick her up?

You want me to? She’s tired.” He stood, walked past Rose, past the shotgun in the dust, past the wagon and what lay beside it. He bent down at Emma Caldwell and he didn’t touch her at first, just crouched close.

“Miss Emma, she didn’t answer.” “Miss Emma, I’m going to pick you up now. You tell me no and I won’t. But you’ve been holding the whole world up by yourself a long time and a man’s offering to set it down for a spell.” She didn’t say no.

She didn’t say anything. He slid one arm under her knees and one behind her shoulders and lifted her like she weighed nothing, which he realized she damn near did. She didn’t fight him.

She turned her face into his shoulder and wept silently into his shirt and her small fists nodded into the fabric over his heart and they didn’t let go. He carried her to the shade of a juniper. Set her down gentle.

Got the canteen and put it in her hands. Small sips, he said. Don’t gulp.

You’ll be sick. What about Rosie? She’s next soon as you’ve had three swallows.

Daddy said I know, sweetheart. Daddy said, “Don’t leave him. We ain’t leaving him.

Not out here. Not for the coyotes. You hear me?

I’m going to take care of him. I give you my word.” She drank, watching him over the canteen mouth. Rose came and sat against her sister, and Emma passed the canteen without looking.

The little one drank slower eyes fluttering shut against the relief of it. Elias stood and walked back to the wagon. He took off his coat, even in the summer heat.

He carried one an old gray duster with the Confederate piping picked off years ago, and he laid it over the man under the wagon. He knelt beside him a moment. He looked at the face, a handsome man, soft hands, a bookkeeper’s hands, not a ranchers’s, mid-s, a wedding band, but no scar from where a band had been before, so a first marriage.

The hair behind the ear was stre with early gray. Worry gray. The kind a man earns staring at columns of numbers that don’t add up the way honest numbers ought to.

Mr. Caldwell, Elias said quietly. My name’s Elias Walker.

I’m sorry to be making your acquaintance like this. Them little girls of yours are mighty fine. I’m going to see to him.

You rest now. You done your part. He went through the man’s coat.

Not for valuables. He left the watch. He left the ring.

He was looking for something else. a letter, a scrap, anything. In an inside pocket, he found a folded square of paper.

A key was sewn inside it. Flat dark iron, the kind that fit a strong box. The paper itself had three words on it written in a careful hand and underlined twice.

Wagon false floor. Elias looked up at the wagon bed, then back at the dead man’s face. Then he crossed himself, which he hadn’t done since he was a boy, and he stood up.

Behind him, Emma’s voice, low, watching. You found it, didn’t you, mister? He turned.

The girl was sitting up against the juniper trunk rose half asleep in her lap. Her eyes were red, but they were sharp again. The shotgun was back across her knees, though she hadn’t lifted it.

Found what, Miss Emma? What he hid? He said a man would come.

He said a good man might come and the bad men might come and the trouble would be telling which was which. How was he going to tell? He said the bad men would ask for the box.

The good man would ask for us. Elias was quiet a long time. Miss Emma.

Yes, sir. Will you and your sister come home with me? What about the box?

I’ll bring the box, but I’m asking about you first. She looked at him long and steady the way her father must have looked across a desk at men who lied for a living. All right, Mr.

Walker, she said. We’ll come. All right, but I’m bringing the gun.

That’s fair, miss. And we ain’t leaving him. No, ma’am, we ain’t.

He pulled the false floor up out of the wagon bed. Underneath, wrapped in oil cloth, was a strong box the size of a family Bible, ironbound, heavy. He tested the key against the lock, and the tumblers turned smooth.

He didn’t open it. Not yet. Some things a man ought to know before he reads, and some he’s better off not knowing till he’s ready to act on what’s inside.

He wrapped it again and set it in his saddle bag. He buried Mr. Caldwell himself with a folding spade he carried for fence work.

He buried him deep, deeper than he had to because he knew what coyotes could do, and he knew what kind of men hire other men to dig up graves. He marked the spot with a ka of red stones, and he took off his hat and stood a long minute and didn’t say any prayers out loud because he didn’t have any left in him, but he thought some. Then he lifted Rose onto the saddle in front of him, and Emma climbed up behind the shotgun across her lap, and the big bay geling turned its nose north toward the high country, where Elias Walker’s ranch sat alone in the summer hills.

They rode in silence a long while. The canyon walls fell behind them. The sun beat down on their hats and their backs, and the dust hung white in the air behind the horse.

Mr. Walker. Yes, Miss Emma.

Why’d you come down that draw today? Looking for a strayed horse. You find it.

Found something better, I reckon. She was quiet a moment. My daddy said the good man wouldn’t know he was the good man.

He said he’d just be a fellow riding by who heard something he wasn’t supposed to hear. What was I supposed to hear? Me praying?

Elias looked down at the top of her dusty bonnet. What were you praying for, child? For somebody to come.

He didn’t answer that. He didn’t trust his voice. He just clicked his tongue at the geling and the horse picked up its pace, climbing, now leaving the burning canyon behind, carrying three souls and one iron box, up into the long green hills, where for 15 years a man named Elias Walker had been waiting alone for a reason to live again, and where somewhere in the dark country he could not yet see the men who had murdered Daniel Caldwell were already saddling fresh horses and asking the wrong questions in the wrong towns and closing the distance.

Rose’s small head fell back against his chest. She was asleep. Her breath was warm and even.

Behind him, Emma’s voice smaller now. Almost a child’s again. Mr.

Walker. Yes, Miss Emma. You said your boy was named Samuel.

That’s right. What was your wife called? A long pause.

The horse’s hooves on the hard ground. The wind in the high grass. a red-tailed hawk crying somewhere far above.

Her name was Mary, he said. That’s pretty. Yes, ma’am.

It surely was, Mr. Walker. Yes, I’m sorry about your Mary and your Samuel.

Elias Walker, who had not wept at his wife’s grave, who had not wept at his sons, who had not wept through 15 winters and 15 summers alone. in a house too big for one man felt the wet come hot to his eyes and he turned his face into the wind so the child behind him would not see it and he rode on and he did not answer her because there was nothing in this world or the next that a man could say to a thing like that hills rose the shadows lengthened and by the time the first stars pricricked through the deep blue dome of the Montana evening the three of them were already most of the way home to a ranch that did not yet know it was going to burn to a quiet that did not yet know it was going to be torn apart by gunfire to a life that was against every Ottoman could lay against it about to begin again. The geling crested the last ridge below them in the long blue twilight.

The lamp in the ranch house window came on by itself a trick of the dying sun catching glass. It looked just for a moment like somebody was home and waiting up for them and had left a light burning so they’d find their way. Emma saw it.

She didn’t say anything. She just rested her forehead very gently between Elias Walker’s shoulder blades, and she closed her eyes, and for the first time in two days, and one terrible night, Emma Caldwell let herself believe that maybe, just maybe, the praying had worked. The geling came down the long grade to the ranchard, and Elias Walker felt Emma stiffen against his back.

Mr. Walker. Yes, Miss.

Somebody’s in the house. That’s just the lamp catching the sun. Nobody’s here.

Somebody is. Miss Emma, I’ve been alone in that house 15 years. Ain’t nobody in it but mice.

Then why is the door open? He looked. The door was open.

He didn’t remember leaving it that way. He never left it that way. He’d ridden out at first light with the geling and the empty saddle bags.

and he’d shut that door behind him the way a man shuts a door when he doesn’t expect anyone to be touching it before he gets back. Get down, mister. Get down, Emma.

Slow. Take Rose behind the water trough yonder. You don’t lift your head till I call.

You understand? Yes, sir. She slid off the back of the horse without a sound.

Rose was still half asleep and made a small confused noise, and Emma clamped a hand over her mouth and carried her on her hip. the way a child of nine carries a sister of five clumsy, fierce, faster than a grown woman could have. They went down behind the trough.

Elias drew the colt and walked his horse the last 40 yards at a walk, eyes on the door. The lamp was on inside. He could see it now, not a trick of the sun.

A real lamp, burning oil. Burning oil he had not lit. He swung down 10 paces from the porch and tied the geling to the rail and walked up onto the boards with the pistol low along his thigh.

“Whoever’s in my house,” he said. “Best speak up before I come in.” A voice from inside, old, familiar, tired. Put the gun down, Walker.

It’s me. He didn’t put the gun down. He stepped through the door.

Sitting at his kitchen table was a man with white hair and a brass star pinned to a vest gone gray with road dust. Marshall Henry Briggs, United States Marshall for the District of Montana. A man Elias had known back when neither of them had any white in their beards.

Henry, Elias, how’d you get in? Same way I always do. The window over the dry sink don’t latch right.

Never has. What are you doing in my kitchen? waiting on you.

Why? Cuz two days ago, a man named of Daniel Caldwell rode out of Helena with his two little girls and a strong box. And yesterday, his horse come back to a livery without him.

And this morning, I got word a couple of Callaways boys was asking around Miles City after a tall fella on a bay geling who took a draw south through the brakes. That’ be you, Elias. That begeling is mighty distinctive.

Elias holstered the pistol. He stood in his own kitchen and felt the floor under his boots and felt the world he’d built tilt sideways. How’d you know I’d find him?

I didn’t. I was hoping he’d have told the girls to wait for somebody. Daniel was a smart man.

He’d have known the only fella out that way who don’t take Callaway’s money is the lunatic that lives up the North Fork by himself and don’t talk to nobody. That lunatic being me. That being you.

Elias went to the door. He cupped his hand to his mouth. Emma Rose, come on in.

It’s all right. Nothing moved. Emma called well.

You come in this house right now. A small head rose above the water trough. Then another.

Then Emma was walking Rose’s hand in hers, the shotgun back across her free arm. She came up the porch and into the room and she stopped dead the second she saw the brass star. You’re a law man.

Yes, miss. My daddy said law men were the worst of them. Some are miss.

I ain’t. That’s what they all say. Briggs took off his hat and set it on the table.

Miss Emma. My name’s Henry Briggs. Your daddy and I knew each other once a long while back when we both worked in Helena.

He came to me 3 weeks ago and he told me he was scared. He told me if anything happened to him, I should write out to a man named Elias Walker. So that’s what I done.

You knew Daddy. I did. What was his middle name?

Pardon? His middle name? If you knew him, you’d know it.

Briggs almost smiled. August. Daniel August Caldwell.

His mother was German. She’d been wanting a boy born in August, and she got a December baby instead, so she put it where she wanted it. Emma’s mouth quivered.

“All right,” she said. She set the shotgun on the table, finally fully set it down, and she walked over to Briggs and stood there in front of him with her dusty face and her ruined dress, and she said, “They shot him in the head, Mr. Briggs.

They made us watch.” The old Marshall closed his eyes. “I know, child.” They laughed when he fell. I know.

They said they was coming back for us. They ain’t going to get you, miss. Not while there’s law in this territory.

Emma looked at him a long moment. There ain’t no law in this territory, mister. My daddy told me that, too.

Briggs didn’t answer. Behind her, Rose had wandered to the corner of the kitchen where Elias kept a tin of biscuits on a high shelf. She was staring up at it.

Mr. Walker. Yes, Miss Rose.

Is there food in that? Yes, sweetheart. Can we have some?

Yes. All of it. All of it.

Miss Rose. He got the tin down and pried the lid off. Hard tac mostly with a few biscuits Mrs.

Olsen had brought up last month when she’d come by with the egg order. Rose took one in each hand and bit into one and made a small sound like a cat purring. And Elias Walker thought he might never in his life see anything that hurt him worse than a starving child eating a stale biscuit and being grateful.

Briggs cleared his throat. Elias. Yeah.

You got the box in the saddle bag. Open it. Not in front of the children.

Elias. Henry, you can sit in my kitchen and you can drink my coffee and you can tell me what kind of war I just signed up for. But you ain’t opening that box in front of them girls.

Their daddy died over what’s in it. They’ll see it when they’re groed and not before. Briggs studied him, then nodded.

All right, Elias. All right. They put the girls in the back bedroom.

The room Elias had not opened in 15 years. He pushed the door and the hinges screamed. And inside under a sheet gone yellow were a small bed and a smaller cradle and a child’s wooden horse on the floor with the paint worn off where small hands had held it.

Emma stood in the doorway. She looked at the cradle. She looked at the horse.

She looked at Elias’s face. This was their room. Yes, Miss.

You ain’t been in here. No, miss. Why are you letting us in?

Elias swallowed. “Reckon it’s been waiting on you.” She didn’t say anything. She walked in and she picked up the wooden horse and she put it in Rose’s hands.

And Rose sat down on the floor and rolled it back and forth on the floorboards and made a soft clicking sound with her tongue like hoof beatats. And Elias Walker stepped out and closed the door and walked back to the kitchen and sat down across from Henry Briggs and put his face in his hands for one full minute and did not speak. When he lifted his head, Briggs had poured the coffee.

Elias, tell me. Victor Callaway. I know the name.

Owns half the rail line from Boseman to the Dakotas. Got the governor’s ear. Got two senators in his pocket.

Got the Pinkertons on retainer and his own private outfit. Besides 40 riders, maybe more on his payroll. The sheriff in Kuster County is his cousin.

the judge in Yellowstones, his brother-in-law. And Daniel Caldwell was his bookkeeper, his accountant. Three years.

Saw every dirty number. Saw the deeds Callaway was forging to take homestead land along the right of way. Saw the men he was paying to make widows out of homesteaders wives.

How many men’s been killed in that ledger? 16 names Elias. 16 families wiped off the map.

Jesus. Caldwell took the book and run. made it as far as the brakes before they caught him.

Why didn’t he come to you sooner? He was trying to. He was three days from Helena.

Paul. I got to bring back men I can trust. And there’s only four of them in this whole territory.

And one’s in jail and one’s drunk most days. Until I come back them girls and that box got to be somewhere ain’t on any map. Callaway can read.

I’m a mile from the nearest road and 10 miles from the nearest neighbor. That’s why he’ll find me. Maybe.

But you’re a hard man to kill. Elias. I seen you prove it twice and he don’t know yet that I know right now he thinks you’re just some hermit.

A loose end 3 days, maybe four before he puts it together that you ain’t. And then and then it’ll be a war. Elias was quiet.

All right, he said. All right. All right, Henry.

You ride. I’ll keep him. Briggs reached across the table and put his old hand on Elias Walker’s wrist.

He didn’t say anything. He just held it there a moment. Then he picked up his hat and walked out.

And Elias heard the saddle creek and the hoof beats fade and the dust settle and the cicas come back into the silence. In the back room, Rose was singing a little tuneless song to a wooden horse. 3 days passed, then four.

Elias taught Emma to saddle the chestnut mare. He showed her the cinch and the latigo and how to test it with a fist in the horse’s belly. Because horses, he said, are smarter than men and will hold breath against a hurried rider.

Why are you teaching me this? Case I ain’t here one morning. Where would you be?

Anywhere, miss. A man falls off a roof. A man steps wrong.

You can’t depend on a man being in there. You depend on the horse. I’m dependent on you, Mr.

Walker. He looked at her. I know it, Miss.

Don’t fall off no roof. I’ll try not to. Rose was a different kind of child.

She followed him from the well to the barn to the wood pile and back. And she gathered things, pebbles, feathers, a piece of green bottle glass worn smooth by the creek. And she brought them to him with both hands and said, “Mr.

Walker, this is for you.” And he took each one, and he put them in a row on the kitchen windowsill until the windowsill was crowded with the small treasures of a 5-year-old. and he did not move a single one of them, not once. On the fourth night, the girl slept, and Elias Walker sat on his porch with the colt across his knees and watched the moon come up over the eastern ridge.

He heard the dog. His dog was an old red healer called Captain who barked at coyotes and at strangers and at almost nothing else. The dog was barking now, and it was not the coyote bark.

Elias was off the porch before the second bark. He went on foot. Low the colt up.

The barn loomed black against the stars. The dog was around the back of it. The bark went up an octave and then cut off short the way a dog cuts off when it seen something worse than what it was barking at.

Captain. Nothing. Cap come.

He came around the back corner of the barn and the dog was there on his belly in the dirt and the dog was breathing hard and the dog’s eyes were wide and white and the dog was looking at the well, Elias’s well. A man had been there. The bootprints were fresh in the dust around the wellhead.

Three sets. They had stood there a long time. They had stood there long enough to do whatever they had come to do.

And then they had walked back out, and they had not been in any hurry. Elias dropped to one knee. He picked up a pebble.

He dropped it down the well and counted. He listened. He smelled.

He smelled almonds. A man who has been in a war and a man who has been around hard men learns the smell of cyanide. It is sweet and it is wrong.

It does not belong in wellwater. It does not belong anywhere near a child. He stood up slow.

There was a piece of paper pinned to the wellhead with a knife. The knife was a clean new Bowie. The paper had three words on it in a neat steady hand.

The girls, or worse, Elias took the paper. He took the knife. He walked back to the porch on legs that did not feel like his own.

And he sat down on the top step and he laid the knife on the boards beside him. And he laid the paper on top of the knife and he watched the moon climb and he did not move for one full hour. Captain came up the steps and laid his head on Elias’s boot.

Cap. The dog thumped his tail once. Cap, you done good.

The tail thumped again. They was at the well, boy. They was at our well.

The screen door creaked behind him. Emma stood there in a night gown two sizes too big. One of Mary’s from the chest at the foot of the bed in the room Elias had not opened in 15 years until today.

Her hair was loose. Her feet were bare. Mr.

Walker, go back to bed. Miss Emma, what’s that paper? Nothing that concerns you.

It does concern me, miss. Don’t you lie to me, mister. Don’t you lie to me the way grown folks always lie.

He looked at her. He thought about it. He handed her the paper.

She read it. Her face did not change. Her face was a face that had stopped changing the day she watched her father die in the red Montana dust.

Miss, what are we going to do? He stood up. He picked up the knife.

He went inside and he came back with a leather strap and he sat back down and he started to wind the strap around the haft of the Bowie, slow and tight, the way a man wraps a tool he means to use. Miss Emma. Yes, sir.

You go in that house. You wake your sister. You put both your dresses in a flower sack and you put any food you can carry in another.

You don’t make a sound. You don’t strike a match. You wait by the back door.

We run and we’re moving. Where? Up the canyon.

There’s a line shack. Callaway don’t know about it. Ain’t on any map.

I built it myself the year after Mary died. And I never told nobody it was there. Mr.

He looked up from the knife. What about it? You leaving it here?

He thought about that. No, miss. We’re taking it.

Elias Walker sat on the porch one more minute with the moon on his face and the knife in his hand. He looked at the well. He looked at the barn.

He looked at the long low house he had built with his own hands the summer he came home from the war and married a girl named Mary in the church at two crows. He looked at the porch where she used to sit in the evening shelling peas. He stood up.

He spit once into the dust. All right, he said to no one and to her and to his boy and to the dead man buried under the red stones in the south canyon and to the girl pulling on her stockings in the dark inside. All right, then.

They want a war. He walked into the house, and he shut the door behind him. And somewhere far down the valley on a road that wound up through the cottonwoods, the first faint sound of hoof beatats began.

The hoof beatats came up the cottonwood road, and Elias Walker counted them. Five horses. Emma was beside him in the dark of the front room, the flower sacks at her feet, Rose half asleep on her hip, with the wooden horse clutched against her chest.

Five. Five for now. More behind, I reckon.

Are we still leaving? Not yet. You said we was leaving.

I said we was moving. There’s a difference. He pulled the Winchester down off the pegs over the door.

He checked the tube. He checked the chamber. He laid two boxes of cartridges on the table and tore the tops off both.

He looked at her. I’ll come, miss. Mr.

Walker, Emma, down the cellar. Now she went. She didn’t argue.

She lifted the trap in the kitchen floor and she swung Rose down first and she followed and the trap came down soft above her head and Elias slid the rag rug back over it with the toe of his boot and the kitchen looked like nothing had happened. He blew out the lamp. Captain growled low at the door.

Easy cap. The hoof bead stopped at the gate. A voice came across the yard.

Walker. Elias Walker. You in there?

Elias knew the voice. A bad knowing. The kind that drops into a man’s chest and sits there.

Tom Riley. He said it out loud to himself in the dark. Tom Riley, deputy out of two crows.

A boy Elias had known since the boy had been a boy. A boy whose mother had brought casserles up the long road after Mary died 15 years ago. A boy Elias had taught to shoot squirrels off a fence rail in the summer of 74.

A boy who was now standing in his yard with four other men in the middle of the night. Walker, come on out. We just want to talk.

Elias stepped onto the porch with the Winchester low. It’s late for talking. Tom got a warrant on what?

Harboring. Two minor children took from lawful custody. Whose custody?

Counties. You’re a county deputy, Tom. Whose county?

Kuster. This ain’t Kuster County. Don’t matter.

It matters to me. The four men behind Riley fanned out a step, hands close to leather. Elias counted hats in the moonlight.

He saw the one on the left was wearing a coat too fine for a deputy. He saw the second man on the right had a Pinkerton badge on a vest chain. Tom.

Yeah, Elias. How much they pay you? Don’t matter.

How much, Tom? A pause. 200.

$200 for two little girls. Walker, your mama know what you done, Tom? Don’t you talk about my mama?

She brought me a peach pie the week after Mary died. You was 9 years old. You was sitting on her wagon seat with your feet not touching the floorboards.

The Pinkerton spoke up. That’d be me, old man. Step aside.

Elias didn’t look at him. He kept his eyes on Tom Riley. Tom?

Yeah. You walk away right now. You get on your horse.

You ride south. I won’t tell your mama what you done. Elias.

Tom, I’m begging you, boy. Walk away. Tom Riley didn’t walk away.

Tom Riley’s hand twitched toward his hip. Elias shot him through the chest before the hand cleared leather. And Tom Riley went down on his back in the yard he had played in as a child.

And the Pinkerton was already drawing. And Elias swung the Winchester. And the next shot took the Pinkerton in the throat.

And the man on the right of him was fast, faster than the rest, faster than Elias had figured. And a bullet came through the porch post next to Elias’s head, and another came through the porch post on the other side. and Elias was on the floorboards before he knew he’d gone down.

He rolled. He came up at the corner of the porch. He fired twice more.

One man went down. The other was already running for the barn. Three down, two left.

And the second set of hoof beats, the ones he’d been hearing under the first ones, was coming up the road now at a full gallop. Cap. The dog was beside him.

Cap, stay. The dog didn’t stay. The dog never had.

The dog came off the porch in a red blur and he hit the running man at the back of the knees and the man went down screaming and Elias put a round into him and stood up. The hoof beatats arrived. 20 riders, maybe more.

Black shapes against the moon. A torch went up, then another, then another. A voice from the lead horse.

A deep dry voice. A voice that did not raise itself because it had not had to raise itself in 20 years. Burn it.

No. Elias said the word out loud to himself to the man on the lead horse. No, you ain’t.

A torch sailed through the air. It hit the barn. The hay went up in a soft wump that did not sound dangerous and was the most dangerous sound in the world.

Elias ran. He ran for the barn because in the barn was the chestnut mare and the bay geling and the small mule he had brought up from Bosezeman in the spring. And a horseman does not let his horses burn, not for any reason, not while he is alive.

He hit the barn door at full speed. He threw the latch. He cut the lead ropes with the Bowie that had been pinned to his well an hour ago.

Hya hya. Out. The horses went.

The mule went. They went out the back of the barn at a panic and they ran for the dark and the smoke was already coming down over the rafters and Elias turned to run back to the house and a man came around the corner of the stall with a pistol. The pistol fired.

Elias felt a hot thing punch through the meat of his left shoulder and spin him half around and he went down on one knee and he came up shooting and the man in the stall went down and stayed down and Elias’s left arm did not want to work anymore. house. He said it out loud.

He ran for the house. The house was burning. Not all of it.

Not yet. The roof on the east side was catching from a torch that had landed in the shingles. The porch was on fire.

Smoke was coming out the windows. Emma. Rose.

Emma. He kicked the front door. He went through.

Emma. He pulled the rag rug. He pulled the trap.

Emma called well. a small voice from the dark below. “Mr.

Walker, come up now. Now, child. Now.” She came up the ladder one rung at a time with Rose on her hip and the flower sacks slung over her shoulder and the shotgun in her free hand, and Elias took Rose under his good arm.

And Emma scrambled the last rungs, and they were in the kitchen. And the kitchen was full of smoke. Mr.

Walker, you’re bleeding. I know it. You’re bleeding bad.

Out the back. Run the box. In the saddle bag on the chestnut.

I sent her out. Run, child, run. They went out the back through the kitchen and through the washroom and through the back door and out into the night and into the smoke and the heat and the screaming horses and the man on the lead horse.

The man with the dry voice saw them go. There, there, take them. Three riders peeled off.

Elias turned with rose under his arm and the Winchester in his good hand, and he fired one-handed, and one rider’s hat came off with the back of his head inside it, and the other two rained hard and circled, and Elias was running half stumbling blood down his side. Rose’s small arms locked around his neck like a vice. Emma treeine, go.

I ain’t leaving you. Go. She went.

She ran. A 9-year-old in a borrowed night gown with a borrowed shotgun running for the dark. Elias dropped to one knee.

He laid Rose down behind a stump. He levered the Winchester and the lever was sticky with his own blood. And he fired and he fired and he fired.

A rider went down, then another. The third turned his horse and rode off. Rosie, Mr.

Walker, you stay behind the stump. You don’t move. You don’t make a sound.

You hear me, baby? Yes, sir. That’s my girl.

That’s my brave girl. He stood up. The world tilted.

He put the rifle butt to the ground and used it to push himself up. The barn roof fell in. The sound was like the end of something.

Captain. Elias had not heard him in a minute. Not a bark, not a growl, not a sound.

He turned. He saw the dog. Captain was lying in the yard 10 ft from the porch with his head on his paws and his eyes open and he was not moving.

There was a dark stain under him that was spreading and was not stopping. Cap. The dog’s tail moved once, just the tip.

Catboy. The tail did not move again. Elias stood in the smoke and the fire light and looked at his dog and felt 15 years of silence break inside him.

a voice across the yard. Walker, the man on the lead horse, had dismounted. He was walking forward across the yard with a long pistol in his hand.

He was a tall man in a black coat that had not been bought in any town within 500 m of here. His hair was silver. His face was calm.

His face had been calm the entire time. Victor Callaway, you’re a stubborn old man, Walker. Mr.

Callaway, you know me. I know your name. Drop the rifle.

No, sir. Drop it. The little one’s behind that stump.

I can see her. If you fire, I put one in her before you can lever the next round. If you drop it, I’ll let her live.

Elias did not drop the rifle. You ain’t going to let her live. I might.

You ain’t never let nobody live, Mr. Callaway. That’s the whole problem with you.

Callaway smiled. A small polite smile. He raised the pistol.

A shotgun went off. Not Elias’s, not Callaways. Behind Callaway.

10 feet back, Emma Caldwell stood in her night gown with the old greener up against her shoulder and one barrel still smoking and the other barrel hammercocked, and her face was a face Elias would remember the rest of his life. It was not a child’s face. It was not a woman’s face.

It was the face of every wife and every daughter who had ever lost a man to a powerful one and had not been able to do anything about it. Tonight she had been able. Callaway was on his knees.

His coat was torn open at the back where the buckshot had gone through. His pistol was on the ground. He looked up at Elias Walker with surprise on his face.

Just plain surprise. As if no one had ever in his entire life done anything to him that he had not paid them to do. I He didn’t finish.

He went down on his face in the dirt of Elias Walker’s yard and he did not get up. Emma did not lower the shotgun. Miss Emma.

There’s more of them. I know it. There’s more coming up the road right now, mister.

She was right. There were. The first set of hoof beatats was already audible under the roar of the burning barn.

She got Rose. He took two steps and his left leg buckled and he went down on one knee in the dirt and Emma was under his arm before he hit the ground. Mr.

Walker, I’m all right. You ain’t. Emma, listen.

The chestnut. She run. She’ll be at the creek.

Horses always go to the creek. You take Rose. You walk.

Don’t run. You’ll fall. You go straight south to the creek and you find that mayor and you climb up and you ride.

I ain’t leaving you. You are. I ain’t Emma.

She froze. You are leaving me, child. You are taking your sister and you are getting on that horse and you are riding for Helena.

You are riding to a man named Marshall Henry Briggs at the federal courthouse. You tell him what happened here. You tell him about the box.

The box is on the chestnut. That’s right. You said that’s right, child, I said.

Now go, Mr. Walker. Go, Emma.

Please. She did not go. She put both her arms around his neck, a 9-year-old girl with a shotgun in one hand, and a dead man behind her, and a burning ranch around her, and she put her face into the crook of Elias Walker’s neck, the way she had wanted to do for two days, and had not let herself do.

And she said into his collar, “You promised. I know. You promised you’d come.” Emma, listen to me.

She picked up the flower sack. She did not look at the body of Victor Callaway. She did not look at the body of Tom Riley.

She did not look at the burning roof of the only house she had slept under since her father had died. She looked at Elias Walker. Mr.

His face broke just for a second. Yes, Miss, he was. She turned and she walked south toward the creek with her little sister on her hip and the shotgun in her free hand and the knight swallowed her up.

Elias Walker stayed where he was on one knee in the dirt of his own yard. The barn roof was gone now. The house roof was going.

The smoke was rolling down the valley and the new riders were close close enough to hear the harness chains, close enough to see the fire light on their faces. He levered the Winchester one-handed. He laid it across his good knee.

He looked up at the moon through the smoke. Mary, he said it out loud. To the night.

Mary, I’m sending her to you. If I don’t make it, you watch for her. You watch for the little one.

You watch close, Mary. You hear me? They’re coming your way, maybe.

And I’d take it kindly. The hoof beatats came around the bend. Elias Walker raised the rifle, and the first rider came into the firelight, and Elias Walker pulled the trigger, and the world he had built, and the world he had lost, and the world he had only just found again, all came down together into the smoke and the heat, and the long Montana night.

The first rider crested the bend, and Elias Walker’s finger tightened on the trigger. Walker, he didn’t fire. Walker, it’s Briggs.

Elias, it’s me. He let the muzzle drop two inches. No more.

A man who’d been shot once that night was not in a hurry to be wrong about the second time. Henry, it’s me, you old fool. Put that rifle down before I have to.

The writers came in, 12 of them, brass stars on every chest. Henry Briggs in the lead with his white hair wild from the wind and his face set the way Elias hadn’t seen it set since Vixsburg. You’re early, Henry.

Half a day wire come from St. Paul faster than I figured. I got Marshalls out of Boseman to ride with me.

You’re still late. Briggs looked past him. He saw the bodies in the yard.

He saw the burning barn. He saw the still shape of the red dog 10 ft from the porch. Where are the girls, Elias?

The chestnut run that way. I sent him. How long ago?

20 minutes, maybe 30. I lost track some. Briggs swung down.

Yes, sir. The writers went south. Briggs cut Elias’s shirt with a clasp knife and made a sound when he saw the shoulder.

Briggs. Yeah. The man on the lead horse.

I see him. That Callaway. Briggs walked over.

He turned the body with the toe of his boot. He looked at the face a long time. He came back.

Elias closed his eyes. Of course it ain’t him. Callaway don’t ride at night.

Callaway don’t ride at all. Callaway sits in Helena in a house with a brass door and he sends men like Pike out to do the killing. Then this ain’t done, brother.

This ain’t even started. A shout from the south. Hoof beats.

Two riders coming back at a hard gallop and one of them had something across the saddle. Marshall, Marshall, we got him. Carter rode up.

Across his saddle was Rose Caldwell. asleep. The wooden horse still clutched in her small fist.

Wallace was right behind him with Emma sitting in front of him on his horse, the shotgun across her knees, her eyes wide and dry, and finding Elias the second she came around the last juniper. Mr. Walker, Emma, you said you’d come.

You come to me, miss. That counts. He stood.

He almost went down. Briggs caught him. Wallace lifted Emma down and she walked the last 20 feet to Elias Walker and she did not run.

A 9-year-old does not run when she has already done all her running. She walked. She put her free hand against his bloody shirt.

She did not say anything for a long time. Where’s the chestnut miss? Tied to a cottonwood.

The bag still on her. Yes, sir. The box still in the bag.

She come to me when I called. Steady like you said. Then Mr.

Elias went very still. What did he give you, Miss Emma? She lifted the hem of her night gown.

Underneath sewn into the lining of the dress she had been wearing for 2 days and was wearing still under the borrowed gown, was a flat package, not a box. A package oil cloth and string the size of a Bible’s spine. He said the box was for the bad men, mister.

He said the bad men would find the box and they would think they had won. He said this was for the good man. Briggs let out a breath that was half a laugh and half a curse.

Daniel Caldwell. He said it twice, mister. He said, “Don’t show nobody till you’re sitting across from somebody you’d trust your sister to.” She looked at Elias.

“I’m sitting across from you.” She handed him the package. He took it. He put one hand on her head.

Just that. He held her there a moment with his bloody palm flat on her hair and he could not speak. Briggs cleared his throat.

We ride now before the rest of them get word back to Helena. Elias, can you sit a horse? I can sit one.

You’ll bleed. I’ll bleed in the saddle. Henry.

They rode out before the eastern sky started to gray. 12 marshals, one wounded rancher, two sisters, and a dog. They buried under the cottonwoods at the south end of the property before the horses turned north.

Three days to Helena. The first day was the worst. The sun came up and went down and came up, and Elias did not remember much of it.

He remembered Emma’s small voice at his elbow keeping him in the saddle. Mr. Walker.

Yeah, Mr. Walker, you got to keep your head up. I am.

Mr. Walker, drink the water. I am.

Don’t go to sleep, Mr. Don’t. I ain’t.

He was. She knew it. She kept talking.

She talked about her mother, a woman Elias had never asked about, and now learned in the saddle a woman named Susanna, who had died of fever the winter rose was two. She talked about a calico cat they’d had in Helena that had three kittens. She talked about a piano in their parlor and how her father had played hymns on Sunday evenings before the trouble had started before her father had begun looking over his shoulder.

She talked because if she stopped he might. On the second day they came down out of the high country and a man on a sorrel horse rode out of a cottonwood draw with a rifle across his pommel. Briggs marshall pick it.

State your business. The man with the sorrel smiled. He had a smile a man uses when he has been paid in advance.

Looking for two little girls. Ain’t none here. That’s a lot of marshalss for a quiet morning, Briggs.

I had a feeling the morning might not stay quiet. The man on the sorrels eyes shifted. He saw Emma in front of Wallace.

He saw Rose in front of Carter. He saw the bloody bandage on Elias’s shoulder. He moved.

He moved fast. He did not move fast enough. Six Marshall pistols cleared leather in the time it took the man on the sorrel to lower his rifle one inch, and the man on the sorrel did not finish the motion.

He went down off the horse without firing a shot, and the sorrel bolted up the draw with empty stirrups. Emma did not flinch. Rose did not wake up.

Elias looked at Emma sideways. “You all right, miss?” “Yes, sir. You sure?” “I’m sure, Mr.

Walker, I seen worse. Henry Briggs heard her say it, and his old jaw worked once, and he turned his horse north, and did not look back at the body in the draw, and they rode on. On the third day, they came down the long grade into Helena.

The town was getting itself ready for the Founders Day festival. Bunting on the lamposts, a bandstand halfbuilt in the square. Wagons coming in from every road with families and pies and bolts of cloth.

And somewhere a child was practicing a fiddle and getting it wrong. A festival. A festival with 5,000 people in the streets by sundown.

Elias looked at Briggs. Henry, I know it. 5,000 people.

Henry, I know it. He’ll move during the festival. He’ll have to.

He’s running out of time. Once that ledger goes federal, he loses everything. He’s got one play left and the play is killing us before we get to the courthouse.

In a crowd. In a crowd. They went to a house on a back street.

Yellow paint. A picket fence. A brass plate on the door that said C.

Bennett MD. A woman opened the door before they knocked. She was 40, maybe a year either side.

The driver got down. He did not unload the hay. He walked away.

Mr. Briggs, she said it at a normal volume. Her father had taught her once in the back of a Helena schoolhouse that screaming makes people stop listening.

Mr. Briggs, come quick. Briggs came down the hall.

He looked out the window. He saw the wagon. He saw a second wagon coming up a different street parking at a second corner of the square.

He saw a third. He went very still. Elias.

Yeah. Elias, get up. What?

Elias, get up. He ain’t waiting for the festival. What?

Elias was already standing. The shoulder screamed. He did not hear it.

How long, Henry? Minutes, maybe less. Down the hall, Rose Caldwell sat at the parlor table with a sugar cookie in one hand and the wooden horse in the other, and Mrs.

Olsen poured her a glass of milk, and the morning bell of the Helena Methodist Church started ringing for 9:00. And out in the square, where 500 families were already gathering with their pies and their children and their Sunday hats, a man in a black coat with silver hair, stood on the courthouse steps, with his hands behind his back, watching the streets, watching the wagons, and waiting for the bell to stop. Emma Caldwell turned from the window.

Mr. Walker? Yes, Miss.

Is that him? He came to the window. He looked at the man on the steps.

That’s him, Emma. He’s looking at this house. I know it.

He knows we’re here. I know it. She lifted the shotgun off her knees.

Mr. Walker. Yes, you promised me.

Then go finish it. He looked at her. He picked up his hat off the foot of the bed.

He picked up the colt off the dresser. He walked past Henry Briggs, past Clara Bennett, standing white-faced in the kitchen door, past little Rose with milk on her upper lip, and the wooden horse forgotten on the table. And he walked out the front door of the yellow house with the picket fence.

Elias Walker walked into the open with his hat low and his coat open and the colt in his right hand and the bandage on his left shoulder bleeding fresh again. Victor Callaway saw him. Callaway’s gloved hand was still lifted.

The signal had not yet fallen. Walker. Mr.

Callaway. You walk into a square full of children. Walker with a pistol in daylight.

You put the wagons here, mister, not me. You don’t have proof of any wagon. I do, sir.

You have nothing. Henry Briggs is across the way with 11 federal marshals and a list of every man you bought in the last 12 years. So is the book.

So are the bank drafts. So is the letter you wrote to the governor in March of 85 about the homesteaders on Big Timber Creek. Dr.

He is. Callaway turned his head one inch. Behind him, three feet behind him, a man named Henry Briggs stood with the muzzle of a 44 against the base of Callaway’s skull.

He had come up the courthouse steps from the other side while Elias had been walking. He had come up quiet. He had come up the way old marshals come up, which is the way old cats come up on birds.

Mr. Callaway. Briggs’s voice was almost gentle.

Lower the hand. Callaway did not lower the hand. You will lower the hand, sir, or I will blow it off your wrist.

Marshall, lower. My men have orders. Your men are dead, Mr.

Callaway. A pause. What?

My deputies took the three wagons before you walked out. The drivers are in irons in the alley. The fuses are pulled.

The powder is being loaded onto a buck board right now for federal evidence. I told Mr. Walker to walk into this square because I wanted you out here in daylight in front of 500 witnesses with your hand raised given the signal you was given which you just give which they just seen.

Callaway lowered the hand. He lowered it slow. Briggs.

It is yours untouched. Tomorrow you walk away from this step and it is yours. Mr.

You will die in St. Paul sometime next winter after a federal trial, and your name will be in the school books for a hundred years as the kind of man this country tried to be and decided not to. Now put your hands behind your back.

Callaway did not put his hands behind his back. Callaway moved. He moved fast for a man of his years.

He had a daringer in the cuff of his coat. He had it out before Briggs’s pistol could press any harder than it was already pressing. And the daringer came up sideways the way a man fires when a gun is at the back of his head and he cannot turn.

And the daringer fired. Briggs went down, not dead. The little gun was a little gun, but the round went through the meat of his thigh, and the old marshall went down on the courthouse steps with his pistol skidding away from him across the granite.

The crowd screamed. The crowd ran. Callaway turned.

Callaway ran into the crowd. A man running into 500 people is a man who cannot be shot at, not by any decent man. Not unless that man has decided that the people in the crowd do not matter.

Elias Walker had decided no such thing. He went into the crowd after him. Walker.

He heard Briggs shout it. He did not look back. He went through the crowd with his good shoulder lowered.

A woman fell. He set her on her feet. A child stood frozen with a flag.

He moved the child aside with his hand. He saw the black coat ahead. He saw the silver hair.

He saw the gap closing. Callaway turned at the bandstand. He saw Elias.

He grabbed a child, a boy. Seven, maybe eight. A boy with a Sunday haircut and a tin sheriff star pinned to his shirt.

A festival toy. A child’s nothing. Callaway had him by the collar with the daringer at his temple.

Walker. The crowd froze around them. A circle opened up like water around a stone.

Mothers screamed and were pulled back. Father stepped forward and stopped. Elias Walker was 30 ft away with his colt down.

Mr. Callaway, drop the pistol, sir. Drop it, Walker, or I put one in this boy’s head.

The only thing you got left to choose, mister, is whether you die ugly or you die quiet. Walker, let him go, Mr. Callaway.

You don’t let him go. A small voice, not Elias’s, behind Elias. He didn’t turn.

He knew the voice. Emma Caldwell had come out of the yellow house with the picket fence, and she had walked down the street with her father’s old shotgun across her arms, and she was standing in the dust of the Helena Square with her bare feet planted apart and her chin up and the muzzle steady. Callaway saw her.

He saw the gun. He saw her face. Something in his own face moved just for an instant.

The polite calm slipped. Underneath it was a tired old man who had spent 40 years not being afraid of anyone and had run out of years. Child.

She did not let it drop. She set it on the ground at her feet like a tool she was done with. She walked across the dust toward Elias Walker and she did not run the way she had not run at the creek the night the ranch burned.

And she stopped in front of him and she looked up at his face. Mr. Walker.

I’m awful tired. He lifted her up onto his good hip. She put her head on his shoulder, and she did not cry, and she did not say anything else.

And the crowd of Helena stood around them and watched. And somewhere among them, a child began to cry. And a woman began to pray out loud.

And a man took off his hat. And then another man took off his hat. And then they all did.

Behind them on the courthouse steps, Henry Briggs sat up on his elbow with his thigh bleeding into the granite and looked at the body of Victor Callaway and said to no one in particular, “Well, there it is.” The federal marshals came in on the noon train. The governor of the territory of Montana was arrested in his office at the capital 3 days later. Two United States senators resigned within the month.

A federal judge in Yellowstone County was indicted for accepting bribes and was buried in his hometown of Boston two years afterward. 16 homesteading families along the Bosezeman cutoff received deeds for land that had been taken from them by forged signatures and threatened guns. They received the deeds in plain envelopes with no return address.

Rose collected things, pebbles, feathers, a piece of green bottle glass from the creek. She brought them in both hands to Elias, and she said, “Mr. Walker, this is for you.” and he took each one and he put them on the kitchen windowsill until the windowsill was crowded with the small treasures of a seven-year-old and he did not move a single one of them.

Clara Bennett came up from Helena every other Sunday at first, then every Sunday. Then she came up one Friday in late spring with a trunk on the back of her buggy and she did not go back and the second bedroom on the north side of the new house was hers. And a year after that she stopped calling it the second bedroom.

She was a good doctor. She made house calls down both sides of the valley. She delivered seven babies in the first summer she lived there.

She did not call Elias by his first name for a long time. And then one evening on the porch she did and he looked at her and she looked at him and neither of them said anything else about it. But he did not call her doctor again after that either.

Henry Briggs came up for supper on Sundays. He walked with a cane. He gave the cane to Rose to play horse with whenever he sat down.

He told stories about Vixsburg. He drank too much coffee. He said the third Sunday of the third month, sitting on the porch in the long blue twilight, that he was thinking of resigning his star and moving up to the valley himself if there was a piece of land going.

Elias said there was. He did. The first crop of sunflowers came up that summer along the south fence.

They came up because Rose Caldwell had taken a packet of seeds from Mrs. Olsen in Helena, and had walked the line of the fence the previous April, with her small hand digging holes one at a time, and her small voice singing tuneless songs to a wooden horse she had set on a fence post as a foreman. The sunflowers came up in a wavering line that did not quite hold a row, and they came up taller than any sunflowers Elias Walker had ever seen.

And on the first morning of August, Rose Caldwell ran out into the field of them in a white dress with her arms held out like the wings of a thing learning to fly. And she laughed. She laughed.

Elias stood on the porch with a cup of coffee in his hand, and Clara Bennett beside him, and Emma at the rail, braiding the mane of the bay geling, and he watched the small white shape moving through the yellow flowers. And he heard the laugh come back up the hill, and he did not look away. Elias.

Yeah, you’re crying. I know it. That’s all right.

I know it. Emma turned from the rail. She looked at him a long moment.

Mr. Walker. Yes, Miss Emma.

You’d done what you promised. He did not trust himself to answer that. He nodded once.

Daddy would say, “Thank you.” He nodded again. I’ll say it for him. She walked over to him on the porch.

She was almost as tall as his elbow now. She put her hand into his hand. She did not look at him.

She looked out over the valley at her sister and the sunflowers and the long blue summer sky. Thank you, Mr. Walker.

He closed his hand around hers. He looked out over the valley. He looked at the fields where his cattle were grazing and the creek where the bay geling had been fold and the new house behind him that smelled of fresh cut pine and at the woman beside him with iodine on her wrist and steady eyes and at the small white sheep laughing among the sunflowers and at the older girl’s hand in his own.

He had ridden out one morning two summers ago to find a strayed horse and he had come back instead with a family. He had walked into that canyon a man who believed his life had ended 15 years before. He had walked out of it a father Elias Walker who had buried a wife and a son and had buried his own heart on top of them who had spent 15 winters alone in a house too big for one man who had believed all the way down to the bottom of himself that he had nothing left to give and no one left to give it to Elias.

Walker stood on the porch of a house he had built with his own hands and looked out at the family God had set down in front of him in the dust of a Montana canyon and he knew all the way down to the bottom of himself that he had been wrong. A man does not lose his life when grief comes. A man loses his life when he decides that grief is the end of the story.

It is not. It never was. Family is not the people you were born to.
